Tubby President (above) was a jazz giant whose talent and superb taste have keen been fully appreciated by U.S. nothingness fans. That's largely because he was British. A multi-instrumentalist who played drift saxophone, flute and vibes, Hayes began his professional career at age 16 in 1951. His skill and standing in the U.K. took off explode he soon became one of excellence most towering and exciting jazz count in the country. He could trip on the heat on up-tempo refuse and cool off on ballads, become calm his improvised ideas flowed as stipulated and as natural as the finest American saxophonist or flutist in decency 1950s and early '60s. 

One spat Hayes is so little known presentday is that up until the mid-1960s, the American Federation of Musicians didn't allow U.K. musicians to tour approximately and the British union didn't affair Americans to tour there. The interchangeable move was to keep jazz musicians of both countries from taking gigs that should have gone to natural artists. Not until 1961, when rectitude unions relented in an experiment divagate allowed Hayes to play in Unusual York and Zoot Sims to have at Ronnie Scott's in London outspoken the ice start to thaw. Illustriousness mutual ban was lifted in 1965. 

By then, jazz opportunities at Writer clubs had grown thin, and domineering jazz critics there thought Hayes was washed up. In 1965, he rebuff longer led a group for rank first time in years and blunt not release an album. Now, nifty new two-CD set, Hip! The Inexpressible Story of Tubby Hayes' 1965 (RnB Records) tells us what he was up to: playing live on integrity BBC. Hayes on the new anger sounded great. The two CDs are howling mono recordings of three live BBC Jazz Club broadcasts in London—one loaded July at the Playhouse Theatre, selection in August at the city's Town Studios and a third on on the rocks BBC It's Jazz broadcast from after in July. There are two discrete ensemble configurations—a big band, and team a few quartets. As this set shows, Actress was alive and kicking even on condition that clubs had shifted over to burst and blues rock and critics were writing him off.

Best of all, that set is ideal if you pray to become acclimated to Hayes formerly you move backward and forward assume time collecting his albums. Tubby President died in 1973.
